In 2022, Hanoi & HCMC dominate wastewater treatment market as 40% of piped water is generated in the 2 provinces. The wastewater treatment sector expects a robust uptrend to meet its upside driven by low penetration rate, rapid development of industrial parks in Vietnam and rapid urbanization.

Amidst abundant opportunities, private investors face several obstacles when entering Vietnam's wastewater treatment market including dated infrastructure, low wastewater tariff and weak cost recovery.

Most centralized wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were funded through public investment projects, utilizing ODA funds or state budgets. The number of foreign-owned companies penetrating the wastewater sector remains limited unveils long-term opportunity for new investors to seize the market potential in long-term.
